Essential oil variability in a collection of Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) cultivars.

Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic plant of great tradition in the Mediterranean area. Its economic importance is growing up determining an expansion of cultivation. This paper evaluated the morphological traits, the chemical profiles, and antibacterial activity of 21 cultivars of basil belonging to Ê»Genoveseʼ, Ê»Napoletanoʼ, and Ê»Purple basilʼ types. The cultivars were characterized by different growth rate and morphological traits. The chemical composition of the oils analyzed by GC and GC/MS analysis, supported by the PCA analysis, underlined the strong influence of chemotype. Antibacterial Activity and Anticancer Activity of Rosmarinus officinalis L. Essential Oil Compared to That of Its Main Components

In this study, Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil and three of its main components 1,8-cineole (27.23%), α-pinene (19.43%) and β-pinene (6.71%) were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activities and toxicology properties. R. officinalis L. essential oil possessed similar antibacterial activities to α-pinene, and a little bit better than β-pinene, while 1,8-cineole possessed the lowest antibacterial activities. R. officinalis L. essential oil exhibited the strongest cytotoxicity towards three human cancer cells. Synthesis of isomorphous cobalt and nickel thiocyanate coordination compounds: Effect of metals on compound properties

The reaction of 2-methylpiperazine with the thiocyanate ligand and two transition metals leads to the production of two new isomorphous [ML2SCN4] where L is the 2-methylpiperazine and [M =Co (1), and Ni (2)], presenting an octahedral configuration. These compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography, TG-DTA analysis, as well as infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy and TG-DTA. The magnetic and antibacterial properties were also determined. Through the link with N-H···S hydrogen bonds, a global 3D network was established.
